Welsh Singers Competition: Competition Rules

The Winner

to represent Wales in BBC CARDIFF SINGER OF THE WORLD 2009, to receive a cash prize of £2000 and a specially commissioned trophy

Other Finalists

Each of the other finalists will receive a cash prize of £750.

Broadcast

It is expected that the competition will be broadcast. The appropriate broadcasting authority and the competition will own all rights in the recording in perpetuity throughout the world in all media now known or hereafter invented without payment to any finalists.

Competitors

The competition is open to singers born or raised in Wales, and who have received a significant proportion of their education in Wales or who have worked permanently in Wales for five years before 25 January 2008.

Qualification for entry is at the discretion of the organisers.

The competition is open to singers aged 18 to 32 on 1 June 2009.

The competition is intended for singers at the early stage of their professional career.

Preliminary and Final Auditions

Venue and Dates

It is expected that there will be four singers participating in the final and these will be selected from preliminary auditions to be held in Cardiff on Sunday 10 February 2008 and London on Sunday 17 February 2008.

The final of the competition will take place at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff on Monday 16 June 2008 at 7.30pm with rehearsals on 15 June 2008 in Cardiff.

Other Dates

The winner is invited to give a recital at the Fishguard International Music Festival and will be offered a recital in the St. David’s Hall lunchtime concert series 2008/9.

Competitors taking part in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2009 will need to be in Cardiff from 3 to 15 June 2009 inclusive.

Repertoire

For the preliminary audition each competitor will be expected to submit, on the application form, a programme of three arias (opera and/or oratorio). The first item will be the competitor’s choice then the panel will select one of the other arias. In addition singers may prepare an item of Lieder if they wish, making a total of four items.

Each finalist will be expected to submit a programme of between 16 and 18 minutes of music duration, with orchestral and/or piano accompaniment as required by the repertoire chosen. These will be required by 1 April 2008 and NO changes will be accepted after this date. It is advisable not to include items that exceed the instrumentation of the standard symphony orchestra.

Accompaniment

For the auditions each competitor will be expected to provide an accompanist at their own expense.

For the final of the competition accompaniment will be provided by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Nicholas Braithwaite.

The broadcaster and competition will own all rights in the guest accompanists’ recording in perpetuity throughout the world in all media now known or hereafter invented, without payment.

Expenses

Expenses will not be paid to those participating in the auditions.
