Sioned Gwen Davies, a 30 year old mezzo soprano from Colwyn Bay wins this year’s Welsh Singers Competition. In an exciting final at St David’s Hall, accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Gareth Jones, Sioned wowed the jury and audience with Handel’s Crude furie degl’ orridi abissi from Serse, Va! Laisse couler mes larmes from Massenet’s Werther, Da, vspomnila… Podrugi milie from Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades, Bolcom’s Caberet Song Amor! (accompanied by Caradog Williams on Piano) and Fia dunque vero… O mio Fernando from Donizetti’s La Favorita.
Sioned wins a cash prize of £2000 and will represent Wales in next year’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
The other finalists were mezzo soprano Eirlys Myfanwy Davies, countertenor Kieron-Connor Valentine and tenors Trystan Llŷr Griffiths and Samuel Furness

The Welsh Singers Competition is open to singers at the early stages of their professional career aged 18 to 32 on 1 June 2017. They must be born or raised in Wales and should have received a significant proportion of their education in Wales.
The competition is arranged by Live Music Now in association with BBC Cymru Wales and with the support of The Arts Council of Wales.
Live Music Now Wales will promote the concert. This charity was founded by Yehudi Menuhin to benefit both young professional musicians and the whole community. The musicians are given opportunities to perform to a wide range of audiences, bringing the experience of live music to thousands of people who cannot go to concerts.
